Film Circuit History
After establishing Cinéfest,
the Sudbury Film Festival, in 1989, Cam Haynes, Film Circuit Founder,
recognized that press coverage and the resulting popularity of Canadian
films with festival audiences (in both Sudbury and Toronto) generated
widespread interest in Canadian titles in smaller communities.
Encouraging communities to curate their own event-style screenings
Haynes formed Film Circuit, an alternate model of cinema distribution
and exhibition that makes it possible for audiences in under-served
communities to experience the transformative power of film. Film
Circuit joined TIFF in 1995
with 16 groups and has since blossomed into servicing 195 groups
in 163 communities across Canada. An established component of TIFF,
the work of Film Circuit continues to be integral to the Group's
commitment to Canadian cinema.
